Ever noticed someone try crossing the road without using the Zebra crossing? Well, crossing away from a designated pedestrian crossing or the zebra crossing in Dubai is generally considered as jaywalking, which leads up to a fine of AED 200-500.

Here are a few basic rules that you should follow as a pedestrian in the UAE

1-Crossing the road on an amber light
Walking on the orange or amber light is considered illegal in Dubai. The orange light at pedestrian crossings is a warning that the light is about to turn red. Pedestrians are typically expected to stop at this signal, as it often coincides with vehicles beginning to accelerate as well. Walking on an amber light, can get you a 400 Dhs fine under the act of ‘Pedestrian Signal Disobedience.’

2- Blocking Other Vehicles
If a pedestrian creates a situation that blocks other vehicles by stopping suddenly on the road, they may be liable to pay an AED 200 fine as ‘Traffic Disruption’

3- Use sidewalks
Using the sidewalks even when the traffic is light can save you from unfortunate incidents. If there is no sidewalk, one should always walk on the left side of the road, to prevent traffic disruption. Always watch for cars entering or exiting driveways or backing up in parking lots.

4- Always be aware
If you are using your mobile or earphones, there are chances that you could be distracted. Make sure to avoid using your phone and even if you are listening to music, reduce the volume so you can be warned of any incoming traffic. This is to prevent any traffic disruption or fatality. Also be mindful of children, especially if you are walking with them to prevent mishaps.

5- Failure to Obey Police Instructions
If perchance, a traffic policeman does stop you, or advises you to follow a rule, and you disregard it, failure to obey their instructions can lead to a 400Dhs fine. Additionally, evading the police can lead to a possible 10000 Dhs fine.
