Dubai is said to increase metro lines by providing 32 more stations for commuters over the coming few years after a development plan was approved on Sunday by the emirate’s executive council.
The expansion aims to increase the currently operating 64 stations over 84 square kilometres to 96 stations over 140 square kilometres by 2030. It aims to cover 140 stations over 228 square kilometres by 2040.
Some of the key goals include:
- To increase the share of public transport to 45 per cent of total city transit. This will contribute to reducing carbon emissions to 16 tonnes per capita, significantly enhancing Dubai’s sustainability efforts.
- The expansion plan supports the vision of a ’20-minute city,’ where residents can reach essential services and amenities within 20 minutes via public transport or walking.
The development around metro stations aims to improve the quality of public spaces, encouraging walking and increasing shaded areas to combat the city’s heat during summer. The plan also seeks to diversify and enhance residential, commercial, and service spaces around the metro stations, making these areas vibrant hubs of activity.
In addition to the metro plan, the council approved the foreign direct Investment development programme, aiming to attract Dh650B of investments to Dubai by 2033. This includes international companies and aims at supporting the expansion of existing international companies with bases in Dubai.
