Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) in Dubai has implemented a ban on e-scooters and e-bikes to enhance safety for both residents and visitors. This decision, confirmed by the Dubai Community Management, is aimed at reducing accidents and ensuring a secure environment within the community. Notices posted around The Walk in JBR now prohibit these vehicles from being used on ground and plaza levels, reflecting a broader effort to maintain public safety.

This new regulation aligns with recent actions taken by Dubai authorities. For example, last month, Dubai Police confiscated 640 e-scooters for various violations, including dangerous riding and non-compliance with rules. Additionally, e-scooters have been banned on Dubai Metro and tram services as part of ongoing efforts to protect public safety.

The primary objective of these measures is to ensure the safety of everyone in the area, including both residents and visitors. The goal is to prevent accidents and maintain the pedestrian-friendly atmosphere of JBR. The restrictions have been clearly communicated through notices displayed throughout the neighborhood, in both English and Arabic.

Experts in UAE road safety have emphasized the need for better education and stricter regulations to address the problem of reckless electric scooter riders. These riders often endanger lives by ignoring traffic rules, such as exceeding the speed limit of 60 kph, riding on busy major roads, and failing to wear protective gear.

For those who still wish to use e-scooters and e-bikes, adhering to the rules is essential to avoid fines or confiscation. Key guidelines include:

  • obtaining a riding permit through the RTA website
  • driving safely within speed limits
  • riding solo without passengers
  • dismounting at pedestrian crossings
  • being over the age of 16
  • and wearing a helmet and reflective jacket.
Violations can result in fines up to Dhs300 or vehicle confiscation.
