As the Indian Medical Association Announces a 24 Hour-withdrawal of Services, Here’s What Bollywood Celebrities Have to Say

The brutal rape and murder case of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, Moumita Debnath, in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital shook the entire nation.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of services by doctors of modern medicine across the country in protest against the brutal rape and murder at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The protest will start at 6 am on Saturday, August 17, 2024, and conclude at 6 am on Sunday, August 18, 2024, according to a statement from IMA. The incident triggered a nationwide wave of outrage, prompting resident and junior doctors to abstain from work in order to protest.

Apart from the doctors, even Bollywood celebrities, from Alia Bhatt to Farhan Akhtar.
 
1. Ritiesh and Genelia both shared a post highlighting the grim reality faced by the victim, stating, “This isn’t a horror story. It’s the reality of the 2nd-year PG student of Chest Medicine at RG Kar Medical College. This isn’t just about doctors anymore; it’s about humanity—if any is left. Speak up, don’t let this die!” They also added captions to their posts demanding justice for the victim.
 
2. Preity Zinta, who has been out of the limelight for some time, penned a lengthy note, stating, “It’s time WOMEN’S SAFETY is PRIORITIZED by the government. It’s heartbreaking and disgusting to see a rapist’s face hidden when arrested, while the names and faces of rape victims and those affected by violent sexual crimes are leaked in the media.”

3. Kareena Kapoor Khan recently took to Instagram to recall the horrors of the Nirbhaya case, which occurred over a decade ago. Her post read, “12 years later, the same story, the same protests, but we are still waiting for change.”

4. Alia Bhatt also voiced her anger and shock over the incident. She referenced disturbing data from the NCRB 2022 study, highlighting that crimes against women have increased by 4% since 2022, with over 20% of these crimes being rape or assault.

5. Ayushmann Khurrana and Farhan Akhtar shared poems on Instagram titled ‘Kaash Main Bhi Ladka Hoti’ (I wish I were a boy) and ‘Speak for me when I’m gone’ respectively, dedicated to women who suffer to such brutal crimes, specifically the 31-year-old trainee doctor
