Today, August 12th, is celebrated as International Youth Day, with this year’s theme: “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development.” This annual observance underscores the critical role of young people as catalysts for global change. It also provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of youth engagement and participation, which are crucial for achieving sustainable human development.

International Youth Day was established by the United Nations in 1999, following the General Assembly’s endorsement of a recommendation by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth. The increasing number of young people in developing countries, coupled with the challenges of providing education and employment to this growing demographic, highlighted the need for such a day. The celebration aims to amplify the voices, actions, and initiatives of young people worldwide, benefiting both them and the global community.

The UAE is actively participating in International Youth Day, reflecting its commitment to empowering and investing in the nation’s youth. Over recent years, significant strides have been made in involving young people in decision-making processes and in the comprehensive development of the country.

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, stated on his X account, “Through their ambition and determination, youth are essential in accelerating progress towards a more sustainable and prosperous future for all, and the UAE is committed to investing in youth and empowering them to transform our nation’s growth.”

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, also shared on X, “Youth are the nation’s bet, the fuel of the future, the locomotive of true development. With their efforts, nations rise, buildings flourish, and human life advances. We are proud of them, and we hand over the banner to them.”

Additionally, in May 2024, the UAE Cabinet approved the National Youth Agenda 2031, which aims to empower young Emiratis to serve as regional and global role models. This agenda seeks to enhance their contribution to economic and social development.
