A rare and captivating celestial event, known as the Blue Supermoon, will be visible on the 19th of August, with optimal viewing around 8 PM. This event occurs when the Moon is fully illuminated and is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun.
The Blue Supermoon will appear larger and brighter than usual because it will be within 90% of its closest approach to Earth, according to NASA. Despite its name, the Moon won’t actually appear blue. The term “Blue Moon” is believed to have originated in the 1500s, possibly referring to rare events or instances when atmospheric dust gives the Moon a bluish tint.
The Dubai Astronomy Group is collaborating with Roxy Cinemas at City Walk for a special evening to mark this event. The night begins at 7 PM with an introductory lesson on the supermoon, followed by a Q&A session where attendees can ask questions.
The evening concludes with a screening of the film “Fly Me To The Moon” at Roxy Cinemas, offering a unique way to enjoy this extraordinary astronomical phenomenon. This event is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to witness a breathtaking sight that occurs “once in a blue moon.”
If you wish to just see it at your own pace however, heading to a place with less light pollution might be a good idea if you’d like a really good view, such as the Al Quaa Milkyway spot, or Hatta.
