Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with Keolis MHI, has launched a pilot programme using drone technology to clean the facades of metro and tram stations—marking a major leap toward smarter, safer, and more sustainable infrastructure maintenance.

Replacing the traditional cleaning method, which required up to 15 workers per station, the drone-based approach operates with just eight personnel. This not only cuts manpower by over 50% but also enhances safety by reducing the need for workers to operate in high-risk environments.

“This pilot reflects our commitment to adopting innovative technologies that improve safety, resource efficiency, and align with Dubai’s sustainability goals,” said Mohammed Al Ameeri, Director of Maintenance at RTA’s Rail Agency.

The drone system also consumes less water per station, supporting RTA’s green strategy. While traditional methods remain better for detailed cleaning, the drone solution has shown strong results in overall efficiency and environmental impact, paving the way for a potential hybrid cleaning model in the future.

Vikas Sardana, COO at Keolis MHI, noted that the initiative aligns with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Smart Dubai vision. “This trial embodies our belief that innovation begins with curiosity and courage,” he said.

The move is part of a broader effort to make Dubai’s transport network more intelligent and sustainable, reinforcing its position as a global leader in smart city innovation.
