While most of us fume in silence, when angered, some of us prefer expressing our rage to the other person, saying a ton of hurtful and mean comments. If, however, you live in the UAE, be careful! As your harsh words could land you hefty fines (honestly, a nice way to prevent road rages).
Here are a few words to avoid, to prevent fines:
- This first one is obvious, but your run in the mill profanity that you prevent your kids from hearing are forbidden in the country.
- Word like ‘fool’, ‘idiot’, ‘silly’, when used as an insult can also land you up with a hefty fine.
- Using animals as insults like ‘donkey’, ‘monkey’ also has a similar predicament.
- Slurs, whether racial, or social, will also cause you fines.
While the propensity of some of the words may seem miniscule or docile, the fines aren’t! here are the fines:
- Online insults and slander would suggest AED 250k-500k fine +Jail term.
- Direct insults (any publicity means) would result in AED 10,000 fine +One-year jail term.
- Direct insults over the phone / facing the victim in the presence of others AED 5,000 fine +Six-month jail term.
Higher penalties are imposed if insults are directed to public officials, so be mindful and demure, when dealing with anger
