Some schools in Dubai are initiating a program to train senior students in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), a globally recognized training program designed to offer initial support for mental health issues, much like physical first-aid training addresses physical health concerns.

Dubai’s Mental Health Framework outlines ambitious goals to be achieved over the next five years, aiming to establish a comprehensive care model covering all aspects of mental health services. Central to this framework is enhancing the educational environment by equipping school staff and parents with tools to bolster students’ psychological well-being.

Ian Plant, Principal/CEO of GEMS Founders School – Dubai South, welcomed the Mental Health Framework as a significant step towards creating a supportive and nurturing educational environment across Dubai. “We will provide counselling services, implement peer support initiatives and eventually build a team of senior students trained in mental health first aid.” He added.

Plant highlighted the integration of health education into school curricula and staff training under the Wellbeing Matters framework, aiming to comprehensively address mental health issues. This initiative underscores schools’ commitment to providing holistic care for students and staff.

Experts in wellness emphasized that implementing mental health first aid in schools will foster a safer and more supportive environment conducive to both academic and emotional growth. Schools in Dubai are already prioritizing mental health and well-being, and embracing the new framework reaffirms their dedication to ensuring all members of the school community feel supported and included.

School leaders reiterated their commitment to enhancing efforts towards creating a supportive and inclusive environment that prioritizes the mental and emotional well-being of students and the entire school community.
