Dubai Police are set to deploy ‘silent radars’ across residential areas, an initiative aimed at enhancing safety beyond just speeding violations. Unlike traditional radars, these devices operate discreetly without flashing, targeting behaviours such as not wearing seatbelts or using mobile phones while driving.

Salma Mohammed Rashed Almarri, head of Traffic Awareness section, said: “The Dubai Police officers always double check the fines taken by video footage before releasing it, especially in behavioural violations like holding phones and fastening seatbelts.”

Hassan Ali Taleb Alhamer from the Traffic Technology Department explained that there are different kinds of radars in Dubai. “Many people think they only detect speeding; however, they also catch illegal U-turns and other traffic violations.”

These advanced radars can monitor up to six main highway lanes and two side lanes, capable of reading obscured license plates. They operate effectively even when vehicles are partially hidden from view.

In addition to these technological advancements, Dubai Police utilize large screens in their Command Control Centre to oversee road conditions in real-time. This centralized monitoring allows for immediate responses to traffic issues and emergencies, ensuring swift intervention when necessary.

The focus of these measures extends beyond issuing fines; they are integral to maintaining road safety throughout Dubai. Despite public awareness of radar locations leading to reduced speeds, authorities emphasize the importance of consistent safe driving practices. These efforts align with ongoing educational campaigns by the Awareness Department, reinforcing the significance of maintaining safe driving distances and adherence to traffic regulations.
