If you think your Dubai Salik tag will work in Abu Dhabi, think again! Abu Dhabi has its own toll system called DARB, which operates similarly to the Salik system in Dubai, however Dubai Salik tag will not work for these tolls, so do not be under that impression. DARB, an initiative by the Department of Transport Abu Dhabi, is part of a larger effort to manage traffic flow and encourage the use of public transport.
The DARB toll system is automated, using overhead sensors to charge vehicles as they pass through designated toll points. Charges are automatically deducted from a prepaid DARB account linked to your vehicle’s number plate via an integrated electronic payment wallet.
According to the UAE government’s official website, toll gates are strategically located on the main bridges leading into Abu Dhabi:
- Al Maqtaa Bridge
- Mussafah Bridge
- Sheikh Zayed Bridge
- Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Bridge
It’s important to note that passing through a toll gate without registering for DARB will result in penalties. The fines start at 100 AED for the first offense, increase to 200 AED for the second, and reach 300 AED for any subsequent offenses. Therefore, if you’re planning to drive into the capital, make sure you’re registered with the DARB toll system to avoid any fines.
The toll gates are active during peak hours, and the charges are deducted automatically from your DARB account. So, whether you’re a resident or just passing through, ensuring your vehicle is registered with DARB is crucial for a smooth journey through Abu Dhabi.
