World Humanitarian Day is being observed across the UAE and globally today, 19th August, serving as a reminder to embrace compassion, empathy, and solidarity with others. This day honours the efforts of humanitarian workers and is commemorated annually under the guidance of the United Nations and with the support of various social organizations. The date was chosen to remember the 22 humanitarian workers who tragically lost their lives in a bombing in Baghdad, Iraq, on this day in 2003.
The purpose of World Humanitarian Day is to recognize and encourage the dedication of those committed to the welfare of humanity. It emphasizes that serving humanity is not confined to specific individuals, organizations, or a single day; rather, everyone can contribute to this noble cause in their way. The day also raises awareness about ongoing humanitarian crises and encourages global action to support those in need.
The UAE has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering critical relief operations worldwide and supporting aid workers on the front lines of crises. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, stated that the nation continues to follow the humanitarian path established by the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He also shared a video on X highlighting the UAE’s humanitarian efforts over the years.
Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs, praised the “inspiring efforts” of humanitarian teams working to bring hope to those affected by conflict and disaster. He emphasized that the UAE, guided by President Sheikh Mohamed and building on Sheikh Zayed’s legacy, remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting the most vulnerable.
Earlier this year, the UAE provided more than 33,000 tonnes of urgent supplies to Gaza and established two hospitals to assist those in need, including a centre providing prosthetic limbs to Palestinians injured during the conflict.
