As our generations begin to use the internet for most interactions, you may sometimes face issues and have misunderstandings such as these… From LOL to GOAT, here’s what some of the most common double-meaning abbreviations stand for:
1. ATM- While mostly used today as at the moment, the abbreviation also stands for Automated Teller Machine.
2. BTS- BTS is understood as the famous K-pop boy band, standing for “Bangtan Sonyeondan” or beyond the scene, however, in the media world it also stands for behind-the-scenes.
3. LOL- This is usually taken as a generational difference but LOL for laugh out loud is used by Gen X to Gen Z, while LOL for lots of love is used by the generations older than Gen X.
4. WTF- Since we all know what one meaning of the word is, here is the second:

5. GOAT- While most of Gen Z see GOAT as the Greatest Of All Time, the other generations simply think of GOAT as a goat.
6. PDA- While in the social world, PDA refers to Public Display of Affection, in the digital world it refers to Personal Digital Assistant.
7. AC- We all know AC as Air Conditioner, but physics students see AC as Alternating Current.
8. PM- Due to social media PM is often seen as Private Message, however, it also stands for the time denoting PM or post meridian in its full form.
9. BF- Ironic but BF stands for both best friend and boyfriend. Talk about mixed signals.
10. RIP- While usually used for condolences “Rest in Peace”, RIP is also seen as the verb rip, or to tear something apart, and is often used as a slang among Gen Alphas, to seem as though they mean Rest in Peace, but they really just mean to rip (and you thought Gen Z was quirky).
