The UAE has officially kicked off its first-ever National Food Loss and Waste Baseline Study, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at slashing food waste by 50% by 2030 in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12.3. Lead by ne’ma, the National Food Loss and Waste Initiative, this 18-month study is the first of its kind in the country and will collect real data on food waste across the entire supply chain—from households and restaurants to farms and public institutions.

With the participation of 3,000 individuals across all seven Emirates, the study seeks to identify the key drivers behind food loss and waste. The data will be used to create national indices and develop targeted, evidence-based interventions to promote sustainable practices.

The effort is supported by a coalition of national and local partners including the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), ADAFSA, Tadweer Group, Dubai Municipality, DECCA, and Aldar, among others. A major milestone will take place in September 2025, when a two-week field survey will collect in-depth household food waste data.

Leaders from across sectors emphasize the importance of collaboration in addressing food sustainability. “This study is a catalyst for long-term change,” said Khuloud Al Nuwais, Chief Sustainability Officer at Emirates Foundation. “By understanding where and why food is wasted, we can empower individuals and institutions to make meaningful change.”

The final findings, expected in early 2026, will not only shape national policies but also contribute to the global movement toward more sustainable and circular food systems.
